Biography: A strong full back who was born in Newport and became the youngest player to notch up 100 league appearances for his home club. Steve was signed for Pompey in 1979 by Frank Burrows, who ironically he had replaced in the Swindon Town defence three years previously. The former Welsh Under 23 international went on to become a permanent fixture in the side for the next four years before retiring in 1983. While still living in the area, Steve did spend a season at Southern League Waterlooville before returning home to south Wales. Once back in Newport he trained and practiced as a Chartered Surveyor until his death in August 2013. The likeable Welshman passed away in the Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport, after a short illness. He was 60. An interesting side note is that his brother Mark, a former Welsh International, was convicted of serious fraud in February 2018 alongside Paul Sugrue who had previously made four appearances for Pompey.
