Position: Defender

Biography: Played for Sunderland between 1957-1970 making a total of 458 appearances for them.This places him 3rd in the all time appearance record for Sunderland & the most for a outfield player.He was possibly part of one of Sunderlands greatest ever back line ups - Montgomery, Irwin, McNab, Harvey & Hurley. After retiring from playing he managed Gilingham,Sheffield Wednesday,Newport County & Cardiff City before returning to Sunderland as manager in 1984 however they were relegated & he was sacked in May 1985. After coaching abroad he returnedto England to become Assistant Manager at Blackpool before taking his last league managers job in 1991 returning to Cardiff City. After this he performed for the Premier League as a match delegate.He published his autobiography 'Left-back In Time' in 2009 which received good reviews. He still lives in the Sunderland area.

Ashurst, Len Leonard is my father's brother. Although distant family I often think about him as my famous footballer uncle and think back of those times he spent in management in the 70s.
I have just read 'left back in time' his autobiography for a second time ,it brings back fond memories. All the best Len
