Biography: John Atyeo is arguably Bristol City’s most famous player but Pompey had the chance to secure his services first. Two impressive performances in the early 1950’s were enough to convince the Pompey hierachy to offer the Wiltshireman a contract but the fact that they would not allow him to carry on as a part-time or to drive a car persuaded him to join the Robins instead. In the following 15 years, he clocked up almost 600 appearances, scored over 300 goals and was capped 6 times by England. Upon retirement from the game, John qualified as a maths teacher and rose to become Deputy Headmaster at a school in Warminster before suffering a fatal heart attack at his Wiltshire home in 1993. Such was his impact, there is now an Atyeo Close in Dilton Marsh, the Atyeo Stand at Bristol City’s Ashton Gate ground and a statue named in his honour on the waterfront in the city.
