Mike Barnard

Mike Barnard

Clubs played for: Portsmouth (1953-1958)

Born: 1933

Birthplace: Portsmouth

Position: Inside-left

Biography: Inside forward who played 116 games for Pompey between 1953 and 1958. It could be argued that he was one of the greatest all-rounders to ever have been born in Portsmouth as he also played cricket for Hampshire and was a member of the team that won the County Championship for the first time in 1961. The former Portsmouth Grammar School boy looked set to become Hampshire CC’s coach when he retired in 1966 but a nasty coach crash left him with a broken neck and meant that he was unable to take up the position. As a result, he found himself organising sporting activities at Warsash School of Navigation. He managed to still be involved with both football and cricket as a key member of BBC Radio Solent’s sports team. Mike died in December 2018 at the age of 85.
