Biography: Born in South Africa to Scottish parents, joined Manchester United from Scottish football for £750 as a centre forward, but the club needed Half-backs and converted him into a Left-half. He was a regular in the team for a decade and formed part of the famous Half-back line of Bell, Charles Roberts and Dick Duckworth. Won two Championships and an FA Cup before leaving for Blackburn Rovers in a £1,000 deal, winning another title in his first season. He became a trainer at Coventry City before moving back to Manchester to work in a similar capacity at City until his death in Chorlton-Cum- Hardy, in November 1934, aged 52.
