Biography: From stopping attacks to keeping out racism, it’s been quite the journey for former the former defender turned pundit and campaigner Beresford. Best known for his time with Portsmouth and Newcastle (where he won the First Division and twice finished Premier league runners up under Kevin Keegan), Beresford played 17 times in the Premier League for Saints and was capped twice at ‘B’ team level for England. Since then, Beresford has worked for BBC Radio Solent as a match summariser, also doing punditry work on ESPN and BT Sport. Beresford has been involved in a number of business ventures since retirement, including interior design and today runs a joinery and shopfitting business, BBJ Northern Ltd based in his hometown of Sheffield. In 2017, Beresford was awarded an MBE for his services to Show Racism the Red Card, taking anti-discrimination workshops into schools and regularly lecturing on the subject. Ironically, Beresford admitted to being one of those he now tries to educate having been guilty of racist abuse as a fan on the Bramall Lane terraces, only to change his outlook having met and played with black players.
