Eyal Berkovic

Eyal Berkovic

Clubs played for: Maccabi Haifa, Southampton, West Ham United, Celtic, Blackburn Rovers, Manchester City, Portsmouth, Maccabi Tel Aviv (1982-2006)

Born: 1972

Birthplace: Regba, Israel

Position: Midfielder

Biography: Started and ended his career in Israel, his home country, but also spent almost ten years in the UK. He was brought to Fratton Park by Harry Redknapp, who had previously been his manager at West Ham. While with the Hammers, he was involved in a furious bust-up with John Hartson which was captured on camera and hit the headlines. Berkovic later commented a the kick in the head received from Hartson "if my head had been a ball, it would have been in the top corner of the net". Retired in 2006 and became general manager of Maccabi Netanya. Although he only lasted two months in the job, fifteen players had been purchased in that time. (Maybe he learned a thing or two from his former boss?). It was reported that he did not get on with the owner and the same was true at his next club Hapoel Tel Aviv. The only apparent answer was to buy his own club, so he acquired Hapoel Rishon LeZion for $385,000 in 2015!
