Bernard, Mike Mike Bernard lived in Endon, when he played for Stoke City. I remember one Saturday morning, two friends and I saw Mike in Endon and asked for an autograph. That was 1968 and we asked if he was playing that afternoon and I remember him saying he was substitute for the visit of I think Liverpool. I have checked the details and it was perhaps 15th May 1968. Mike established himself as a tough tacking midfielder complementing the skills of George Eastham and Peter Dobing in the Stoke City team that won the League Cup in 1972 - those were the days!

BERNARD, Mike None of your facts are correct . He retired with a burst thigh muscle and had a pub in Chester. Went on to being Commercial Manager at Crewe. We moved to a village just outside Malmesbury in Wiltshire where he did painting and decorating. Retired 10 years ago and moved to Portugal. Now spends time between UK and Portugal.
Now updated - sorry!

BERNARD, Mike As a Stoke City supporter i remember him well . Tough and uncompromising . One particular moment i will always remember :- 1972 and "The Potters " were in the semi-final of the League cup against West Ham. After the home leg and the second leg at Upton Park (thanks to an incredible save by Gordon Banks to a Geoff Hurst penalty) it ended all square. The first replay at Hillsborough ended in a draw, then onto the second replay at Old Trafford which was like a "paddy field". Terry Conroy slid into the West Ham keeper who had to be stretchered off. The late, great Bobby Moore went in goal. Some time later , Stoke City had a penalty, up stepped Mike Bernard to take spot kick only for Bobby Moore to parry ball out, only to see Mike Bernard hit the rebound back into the goal for the winner. The rest is history, Stoke went on to beat Chelsea 2 - 1 at Wembley (Conroy/Eastham ). A very memorable time indeed.
