Position: Goalkeeper

Biography: Wareham born Best joined his local club Bournemouth as a sixteen year old in 1960 and played for Oldham Athletic and Ipswich Town before joining Pompey in 1974. He signed in a £22,500 transfer from the Suffolk club and became first choice keeper for the 1974/5 season. His career then turned full circle, returning to his first club Bournemouth and then settled back home in Wareham, Dorset. Managed Dorchester Town and Wareham Rangers in the Dorset Combination League and worked as a transport manager for Westwind Air Bearings in Wareham. It was during a match at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea that he was the victim of an amazing goal 'that never was' - the ball had actually gone through the side netting!

Best, David Remember david best in a game against arsenal 73/74 season.? It was shown on match of the day( only two games shown back in those days) he had a absolutely fantastic game that day. Truly outstanding. Being a school boy goalkeeper at the time it has always stuck in my memory. Shame I can’t find the game on YouTube. I remember it was a sunny day. I’m now 57 so the performance must have been good for me to remember it for all these years. Many good goalies from this time were overlooked in my book. Many thanks Steve mortimore

Best, David Just to say, following David Best and the Ipswich Town team were truly great days as a young lad. David Best made some outstanding saves . Memories of being squashed into the old North Stand when football songs continuously echoed out.
