Biography: It took several attempts from Sir Alex Ferguson to land his man but he finally managed it in 2001, when he needed a replacement for Jaap Stam. He took his time to settle but eventually helped the club to the 2002-2003 Premier League crown in his last season before retirement. He became coach of Bordeaux in 2007, staying until the end of the 2009-2010 season when he left to take over as coach of the French national team. Later managed former club Paris Saint-Germain but left in 2016 after three years in the hot-seat. At the time, it was claimed that his severance payment would be in the region of 22 million Euros!
