Noel Cantwell

Noel Cantwell

Clubs played for: Western Rovers, Cork Athletic, West Ham United, Manchester United (1949-1967)

Born: 1932

Birthplace: Cork, Ireland

Position: Full-back

Biography: His performances for West Ham prompted United to pay £29,500 (a record for a full back) to prise him away from Upton Park in 1960. Having more than repaid his fee with solid displays in the red number two shirt, he reminded many at Old Trafford of Johnny Carey with his gentlemanly approach to the game. In his seven years at Old Trafford, he played in the successful 1963 FA Cup winning side. He retired in 1967 after only playing a handful of games during the march to the title. Tipped by many to succeed Matt Busby, he left the club to take charge of Coventry City. After Coventry, he managed in the Republic of Ireland and the New England Teamen in America. Until his retirement in 1999, Cantwell took on the New Inn pub, close to another of his managerial stop-offs, Peterborough United, where he was twice manager and had also served as general manager. He lost a long battle to cancer in September 2005
