Having retired in 1910, he became the Devon club’s first manager and took them into the Football League during his 14 years in charge - their longest serving boss and a record that still stands today. He briefly took charge at Reading and returned to Saints as manager in 1925. After six years in the dugout at The Dell, he retired and returned to live in Exeter. He died in 1936 whilst watching his old side in action.
