Biography: Despite being a hero at Southampton and their all time leading goalscorer, the likeable Wiltshireman was welcomed at Fratton Park when he joined in 1985. Manager Alan Ball recognised that his 37 year old former teammate could still play a part while he rebuilt the team. This proved to be Channon's last season as a pro but it did allow him to reach the milestone of 700 league aappearances. They later starred in their own late night television programme 'The Channon and Ball Show' reminiscing on the golden era of 1970s football. He also scored 21 goals in 46 England appearances during his first of two spells at the Dell, and starred in the 1976 Cup Final victory over Manchester United. Channon has remained a prominent name in sport, as a highly successful stable owner and racehorse trainer. He has produced over 300 winners at his West Ilsley stables, with horses owned by several of his old colleagues and illustrious football names such as Kevin Keegan, Alan Ball and Sir Alex Ferguson. Channon has had several books released, covering his double life as prolific net buster turned serial horse race winner. “How’s Your Dad” (2015) is an interesting account written by his son Mick Channon Jnr which documents his relationship with his racehorse trainer father, and his authorised biography “Mick Channon”, an updated version of his earlier book “Man on the Run” are still available today from Amazon.

Channon, Mick One of the few players I remember the most for always having a smile on his face. Bet that has changed, great player though.
