Biography: Gershom Cox has the unenviable record for having scored the first own goal in the Football League on his debut! Despite this, he did play in all of Aston Villa's matches that season (1888-89) and notched up 86 appearances in total. Won an FA Cup runners-up medal in 1892 but a broken leg ended his career in 1889. He then became a market trader before joining the local police force. Died in 1918 while living in Gravesend, Kent.
