Biography: A crucial figure in the history of Chelsea FC. He arrived from non-league Southall after going unnoticed by other London clubs and was only one of three players to play for the club on either side of the Second World War. During the conflict he was working in London and was a regular in the Half-back line but when hostilities ended he struggled to hold on a regular place. In 1952 he was appointed manager of the club's youth policy which he had started five years earlier and in doing so had created a production line that was to develop legends like Venables, Greaves, Osgood, Tambling and Bonetti. He stayed in the job until the late 1960's and lived in London until his death in 1991.
