Biography: A Pompey legend, Johnny Gordon was born in the city but was actually registered as a Hibernian player when his hometown club came knocking. His father was in the Navy and based in Scotland at the time but this did not stop the 18 year old agreeing to a move. Made his debut in 1951 against a Blackpool side that contained Mortensen and Matthews and went on to make the number 8 shirt his own. In total he played for over 15 years with only a brief spell at Birmingham interrupting up a fantastic Pompey career. By the time Johnny retired in 1968 he had notched up over 400 appearances. In the sixties he came runner-up in a televised talent show as a singer but chose a career in the licence trade. Ran a number of local pubs and bars living in Southsea until his death on 26th May 2001 aged 69.
