Biography: After a successful playing career, the former England midfielder came to Pompey as a 34 year old to work as Alan Ball's assistant. but became manager in his own right in January 1989. His tenure was to last almost exactly one year before going on to take charge at Plymouth, Wycombe, Aston Villa, Derby, and QPR. He managed Israel's top Arab club Maccabi Ahl Nazareth between December 2009 and May 2010 when took over at F.C. Ashdod, also in Israel's top flight.
