Biography: Son of former Coventry City player Tony Hateley, Mark signed from the same East Midlands club for £200,000 in May 1983. He had already won England Under 21 caps and proved himself as a handful in the box and it didn't take long before he was tempted away from Fratton Park by the glamour of Spanish football. After an impressive1983/4 season with Pompey which earned him the Player of the Year trophy, and a successful integration into the national side, AC Milan (managed by Fabio Capello) were prepared to part with £915,000 in June 1984. He later played for Monaco in France (managed by Arsene Wenger) before ending his career in Scotland with Rangers and then a few games for Ross County. Apart from a brief period as player manager with Hull he has been working in the media. His son Tom is now playing for Motherwell. Player of the season in 1984.
