After helping Morpeth Harriers to win the Alliance championship, Hewitson went into Southern League football and won fame by keeping an intact goal for Crystal Palace in an English cup tie at Newcastle, which was knocked out by one goal to nil. Hewitson, Bob I have a feeling that there are two Bob Hewitsons' that have a connection with football. I have found a reference to Bob Hewitson in the British Newspaper Archive that reports his death in the First World War on the 18/09/1916 whilst serving with the 9th Battalion Black Watch. A search on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website reveals he is buried at Contalmaison Chateau Cemetery in France. Other data indicates he was actually born about 1880 although I haven't been able to find the exact date of birth. There is another Bob Hewitson whose birth year is 1884 and died in 1957 who is linked Gateshead FC. It would seem that these are two separate people whose details have been merged in error.
