Howells, David Originally a striker, Terry Venables spotted Howells' combative qualities & transformed him into one of the best defensive midfielders of his day. He passed largely under the radar, but was mobile, tough, had 2 good feet, & intelligence. While Gazza, Sheringham, Anderton, Ginola et al attracted most attention, Spurs played best when Howells was sitting behind them, 'taking care of business'. My abiding memory was his early doors clash with Blackburn's captain Tim Sherwood in 1995, when Blackburn went on to win the Premiership. Sherwood came off 2nd best & hid for the rest of the game, which ended Spurs 3 : Blackburn 1.
