Mark Jones

Mark Jones

Clubs played for: Manchester United (1950-1958)

Born: 1933

Birthplace: Barnsley, West Riding of Yorkshire

Position: Centre-half

Biography: A Munich victim, he came up through the ranks after joining United, when he was a bricklayers apprentice, as deputy for Allenby Chilton. He had to wait for his first team chance but he was one of several young players given an extended run in the side in 1954-1955, and he was ever present the next season when the League Championship was secured. He was part of the squad that retained the title but lost out to Jackie Blanchflower in the 1957 FA Cup Final and the Half-back line of Colman, Jones and Edwards, which was on a par with the famous line up in Edwardian times of Duckworth, Roberts and Bell. He was only 24 when he became one of the victims of the Munich air crash. He is buried in Wombwell near Barnsley.
