Nils Middelboe

Nils Middelboe

Clubs played for: KB, Newcastle United, Chelsea (1913-1922)

Born: 1887

Birthplace: Brunnby, Sweden

Position: Defensive Midfielder

Biography: Signed for Chelsea after permission from Newcastle when he was introduced to the club by another great amateur Vivian Woodward. The first non- British player in the clubs history made his debut against Derby County in November 1913 and was appointed captain despite never having played for the club before. A true amateur, he wasn't required by the club to travel to away games and even his appearances at home were too infrequent during his nine years at the club. Whenever he played for the Danish national team during his time in the capital he always gave the name of his team as KB never as Chelsea! He kept in touch with the club and was a guest at the 1967 FA Cup Final, some 54 years after leaving. A qualified lawyer, he worked as a banker during his stay in London and was the first ever scorer for the Danish national team. He died in Copenhagen in September 1976 aged 89.
