United finished First Division runners up in the same season, and his contribution was an impressive haul of 21 goals in 44 appearances. He fell out with Sir Matt Busby after he was left out of the team in early 1949, and after handing in a transfer request, he left Old Trafford for Derby County in a record breaking deal worth £24,500. An England international, he won three caps and scored on his debut in a match against Norway and notched up two more in his next appearance against France. Later managed several non- league teams including Corby Town, Kettering , Rugby and Oswestry. Became a tyre salesman after leaving the game in 1969.
