Jerry Murphy

Clubs played for: Crystal Palace, Chelsea, Fisher Athletic, Blacktown City, Wollongong City (1976-1990)

Born: 1959

Birthplace: Stepney, Greater London

Position: Midfielder

Biography: A member of Terry Venables exciting young Palace side dubbed the 'Team of the Eighties', he was John Hollins first signing for the club on a free transfer. Wretched luck with injuries kept him from being a first team regular for much of his time at Stamford Bridge. He impressed on his home debut against Coventry City only to lose his place through injury. Competition from Kevin McALISTER and Mickey Hazard restricted his appearances in his first season, while fitness problems limited him to 13 games in his final two seasons before his contract was cancelled in the summer of 1988. A Republic of Ireland international, he emigrated to Australia but then returned to coach disadvantaged kids in his native East London.

Murphy, Jerry Hi Jerry. Even though I’m a Man Utd fan, I kind of followed your career sporadically as you were the subject of ‘Focus On’ in the first issue of Shoot that I bought in 1980. Hope you are keeping well these days.

Murphy, Jerry I went to Stepney Green School with Jerry, He was a year younger, a good footballer even at that age. We had Harry Cribbs from Millwall training us and a West Ham player who I believe was Buchanan. Jerry always made fun of me, would like to say hello if he remembers me.

Murphy, Jerry Jerry has been a family friend of mine for years. Such a lovely guy. I still see him now and again and he’s doing okay, still doing some things for football. he used to be a coach for a little club called Breaks Manor. That’s where I met him and found out who he was but my grandparents have been friends with him for years now.

Murphy, Jerry I’ve just found out that Jerry is my second cousin! My late Mum was Ivy Percival. Her Mum was Jane Weaver (later Percival) sister of Alice Weaver (later Murphy) and Jerry’s Nan. I would love to get in touch with Jerry and say hello. When I was a little girl Mum took me to see great Aunt Alice a lot. Hope this message finds its way to Jerry.

Murphy, Jerry I grew up in Stepney and played football with Jerry he showed talent then but I always notice he was predominantly left footed. Not seen him or his cousins Harry and Micky for 49 years.

Murphy, Jerry I went to the same school as Jerry my younger brother Neville played in the same team club and school. Whenever I watched him he always stood out sweet left foot, good control, lots of vision and always seemed to have time on the ball very gifted player...hope he is well wherever he is now.
