Myerscough, Joe I was born in 1935 and during the war lived with my parents and brother in a cottage owned by the Lancaster County Mental Hospital. The house was very old fashioned and had no inside toilet or bathroom. In 1944 it was decided to refurbish the property and .the final part of this was painting and decorating.

My father was a well known amateur footballer and I remember him saying that the painter, Joe Myerscough was a former professional. I did not really understand what this meant but remember Joe as a smiling, friendly man. I am particularly reminded of him today, the anniversary of D Day, as on his daily arrival he would ask to see the newspaper which had just been delivered and ask a question along the lines of, "Has it happened yet", referring to the impending invasion.

In 1946 I started to attend Lancaster Royal Grammar School and would pass Joe, who was walking in the opposite direction to his work at the hospital. On leaving school I continued to see him as I walked to Lancaster Town Hall to catch a bus to my place of work.

Joe always had a cheery greeting and I do wonder what he would think of today's professional footballers. It is unlikely they will ever hold a paintbrush.
