Gary O'Neil

Clubs played for: Portsmouth, Walsall, Cardiff City, Middlesbrough, West Ham United, QPR, Norwich City, Bristol City (2000-2016)

Born: 1983

Birthplace: Beckenham

Position: Midfielder

Biography: Made his debut as a 16 year old in January 2000 but had to be patient over the next few years as a succession of managers only used him as a bit-part player. Things finally changed in 2001/2 when his reputation continued to grow and earned him a call up to join the England Under 20 squad and to captain the side in the 2003 FIFA World Youth Championship. When Technical director VelimirZajec took over a temporary manager he made O'Neil a regular in the Pompey midfield and his consistently impressive performances led to a £5 million bid from then European Champions Liverpool. Gary was named Player of the Year in 2006 but was sold the following season to Middlesbrough in August 2007 for a fee of about £5 million.
