Biography: Alan Ball was a big fan of Martin Phillips having managed him at Exeter City, Manchester City and then being responsible for bringing him to Fratton Park for £100,000 in 1998. Having failed to establish himself, he returned to his roots to play for Plymouth Argyle and Torquay United before being forced to retire from the game due to suffering chronic fatigue syndrome.
