Biography: The Second World War delayed Duggie Reid's rise to prominence. He had signed for Stockport County in 1936 but had to wait until 1946 for his big chance. This came in an £7,000 move to Pompey who, with his help, were to win the League in subsequent years - it was his hat-trick on the last day of the1949/50 season that secured the title on goal difference. 'Thunderboots' continued to knock in the goals, 146 in total, one of which, a penalty, literally burst the net. Having won over an initially sceptical crowd, he became one of Pompey's greatest ever strikers and played up until the ripe old age of 38. After a short spell at non-league Tonbridge, Duggie returned to Fratton Park and worked as Head Groundsman until 1978. He then ran a youth hostel for the club before retiring to Widley, Portsmouth. Died in Park Gate in February 2002 (aged 84)
