Charlie Roberts

Charlie Roberts

Clubs played for: Rise Carr Rangers, Darlington St Augustine's, Bishop Auckland, Grimsby Town, Manchester United, Oldham Athletic (1903-1915)

Born: 1883

Birthplace: Darlington

Position: Centre-half

Biography: The £600 United paid for the services of a player with less than a year's experience represented quite a gamble, but it paid off as the quick centre wing half, part of the Roberts, Dick Duckworth and Alec Bell trio, went on to become the inspirational captain of the great United team of the Edwardian era, winning two league titles and a FA Cup. A founding member of the PFA and chairman until 1925, Oldham Athletic paid a record £1,750 but his career was ended during the Great War. He became a wholesale tobacconist, and even created a cigarette "Dunrobel" after the famous Half-back line he was a part of. He also owned stationery and newsagents' shops in the Manchester area. He died at Manchester Royal Infirmary in August 1939, following a cranial operation after suffering extended dizzy spells.
