Rutter, Cyril An apprentice and a pro at Pompey, 1961-1965, then three at Gillingham and eight in the US with the Dallas Tornado, I remember Cyril very well. An always positive 100 percenter, encourager and overall nice man!!

I visited him in October 2019, a Sunday. He was alone, and not able to communicate well, but managed to. We sat down, and he got the message across to me that he didn’t remember. I nodded and he nodded and he knew that I understood. It could have been an awkward 20 or so minutes, but it wasn’t. Cyril made me welcome. He showed me his on the wall family pictures. I shook his hand as I left, Cyril waving at me as I walked away.

Thanks for the memories, Cyril…

Rutter, Cyril He drove a few of the younger Portsmouth players to Lilleshall, myself included, for coaching. Halfway there the brakes began to fail, and he considered stopping. But we urged him on, he drove using the handbrake, and we made it safely. As I remember it was a Sunday, so the roads weren’t as busy.

He worked for the U.S. Armed Forces for awhile, after he retired. On his return he was interviewed on TV, and he spoke quite poshly. Which surprised us. A couple of days later, he turned up at the park in a very long Mercedes. We shouted out to him, “Hey, Cyril. How you doing?” “Fine boys, Fine,” he replied with no accent. The old Cyril was back!

His 100 percent effort and honest competitiveness.

His good humour, on and off the field of play.
