Biography: Saunders was working as a shipping clerk near Stamford Bridge when he was persuaded by Ted Drake to join the professional ranks, after previously playing for Walthamstow Avenue. A highly skilled wing half, he formed a fearsome barrier with Stan Willemse. An ever present in the 1955 Championship winning side, he was appointed team captain in 1957 to help the steady influx after youngsters Drake's Ducklings. He announced his retirement a couple of years later following a stint out with injury. Joined the club's coaching staff, then worked as groundsman and chief soccer coach at Westminster School before becoming groundsman at Hampstead Cricket Club. Was also tutor in-charge of Putney and Wandsworth Adult Education under the Inner London Authority Now lives in retirement in Frinton on Sea, Essex.
