Biography: He was United's first ever captain, having continued in the role he held when Newton Heath ran into financial problems. Legend has it that it was Stafford's dog 'Major' that brought Stafford and John Henry Davies together, leading to Davies, a wealthy brewery owner, buying the club and whipping the debt away while Stafford became groundsman and a director of the club when he retired. He ran a pub in Wrexham before emigrating to Australia but he ended up living in Canada, where he owned a large hotel. His son, Harry Jnr, died in December 1988, aged 87, a victim of killer GP Harold Shipman.
