Standen, Jim my father took me to lords for a test match i think it was England v west indies one of our reasons for attending was the fact as west ham fans we were keen to see jim standen playing 12th man for England. he was fantastic out on the boundary the indies would only ever run 2 when the ball went to jim, because he was so quick at getting to the ball and returning to the keeper. any other player it went to on the boundary the indies ran 3.

Standen, Jim Hi Jim,I hope you and your family are safe and well? Upton Park was my second home from 1959 until I moved to Hampshire in early 70 s.
You were the best safest solid keeper West Ham had in that time! I watched almost every game and the reserves when first team away, you were so good between the sticks, thank you for all the great times a true claret and blue hero. I was lucky to get a ticket in 64 FA Cup final what a fantastic day,and again in E.C.winners final again at Wembley stadium, emotional evening never forgotten you all, thanks for the memories Jim Standen, up the Irons.

Standen, Jim I don't think Jim Standen was 12th man for England. The 12th man usually went back to his county when he was not selected. Jim did come on as a replacement fielder for an injured player in a test match. I think against Australia. The Australians would have agreed to allow Jim to be a replacement fielder but I think if I had been the Australian captain I would have objected because Jim was an outstanding fielder, better in the outfield than any player in the England team. The effect of Jim coming on was to improve the England team. In my memory he fielded at cover and produced some tremendous stops.

Standen, Jim I was invited by a school friend and his dad to go to a night match at Luton Town us boys were about 10/11 years old at the time. The big attraction was Liverpool were the visiting side about 60 years ago. Ron Baynham was injured so Jim Standen was between the sticks, the only other Luton Player I recall was Sid Owen. Bill Shankly was on the cusp of developing his first great side, here are most of the Liverpool players as I recall it, Tommy Lawrence goalkeeper, full backs Alec Lindsey & Chris lawler, I think young Tommy Smith had just made it to the first team, Ron Yates centre half, number 6 blank, strikers led by Ian St John, Roger Hunt & Ian callaghan, number 7 & 10 blank. Despite Liverpool swarming all over them with a final winning score of 5-3 the thing I remember more than anything else was Standen's performance was brilliant, without him Liverpool would or could have scored many more goals 10 would have been realistic. He was the guy that kept the score down with many arial saves despite being caked in mud & soggy gloves. I always expected to hear that he had signed for a big club and would be their first choice goalie, the luton match must have been one of his finest performances. My oh My how goalkeeping has changed over the years. I hope he gets to hear about this wonderful performance he gave that cold wet night, I just went home in a daze!

Jim Did Jim ever have any connections with or in Bristol, UK. My late father, Victor Lionel Standen, born and bred in Bristol used to tell me about him and about us being distantly related in some way!! possiby not, but very interesting as I was born in 1959 in Bristol, and was quite an accomplished goalkeeper in my day, however, I was rubbish at cricket!!

Standen, Jim He was an excellent goalkeeper and cricketer.
If I remember correctly,he was 12th man for England and came on to field.
Because he was very fit,he was very fast, fielding out on the boundary.
