Nobby Stiles

Nobby Stiles

Clubs played for: Manchester United, Middlesbrough, Preston. (1960-1974).

Born: 1942

Birthplace: Collyhurst, Manchester

Position: Defensive midfielder

Biography: Is best remembered for his jig after England's famous 1966 World Cup victory, a tough aggressive Half-back but there was much more to him than a hard man image. He was a vital part of Sir Matt Busby's team that won two championship medals, and the European Cup Winners medal in 1968 after overcoming the disappointment of missing the 1963 FA Cup Final against Leicester City. To have huge influence in the success that the club enjoyed, he played in contact lenses after Busby sent him to have his eyes tested to improve his game after too many poor challenges. He secured his place as a true United legend before leaving for Middlesbrough in a £20,000 deal. He managed WBA and was a co-director of United's School of Excellence. Is now an after dinner speaker. His son, John, played for Leeds.

Stiles, Nobby I was with a couple of friends at a United A team game at The Cliff which was Uniteds training ground in the 1950s, for some reason Nobby was not playing so was dressed casually, my friends approached him for his autograph, and Nobby jokingly said 'I'm not a player' afraid he didn't get away with it then nor did he when he won his World Cup winners and European Cup winners medals! lovely bloke, smashing player!
