Biography: Despite a career that spanned over 400 league appearances, most at the top level and an England call up, Unsworth is probably as well remembered for a fateful move to Aston Villa in 1998. Having joined the club from West Ham for £3 million in the close season, he left without making an appearance and re- joined his first club, Everton. The tabloid press had a field day, accusing him of being 'under the thumb'. In the light of this it is somewhat surprising that he agreed to move much further south to join Pompey in 2004. His stay was relatively brief and despite scoring a couple of important penalties, he returned north to sign for Sheffield United. In 2008, Unsworth was appointed player-coach at Huddersfield Town, however he left this position and subsequently retired the following year. He was appointed development coach at Preston North End shortly afterwards, but soon after was promoted to first team coach.
