Gary Walsh

Gary Walsh

Clubs played for: Manchester United, Aidrieonians, Oldham Athletic, Middlesbrough, Bradford City, Wigan Athletic (1985-2006)

Born: 1968

Birthplace: Wigan

Position: Goalkeeper

Biography: An England Under-21 whose United career was marred by injuries, he made his debut as an 18 year old and later in 1986-1987 he had displaced Chris Turner from the United first team. But two head injuries saw Turner (who is now his boss Hartlepool) back into the team. He then fell behind Jim Leighton in the pecking order. An ankle injury kept him out of action for the best part of two seasons and by the time he was fit again, Peter Schmeichel was at the club. He moved on to Middlesbrough in 1995. After retirement in 2006, Walsh had already become player- goalkeeping coach of his last club, Wigan Athletic, and after officially hanging up his boots, he continued his coaching role with Derby County and currently Hartlepool United. Has worked with many of today's top keepers and has also set up his own goalkeeping academy.
