Biography: Whalley only played 39 games for United because of the Second World War. He was fast approaching the end of his career when normal league football resumed, and after just a handful of first team games an eye injury forced him to retire. The Methodist lay preacher joined the United coaching staff looking after the development of Busby Babes. He lost his life at Munich, aged just 45, after making the trip because Jimmy Murphy was managing Wales in Cardiff. His body was cremated at Dunkinfield Crematorium, Cheshire.
