Biography: A close friend of Roy Bentley, he followed manager Ted Drake from his native Reading to West London in a deal worth £13,000. This turned out to be some of the best money that the manager was to spend during his tenure. A commanding Centre-half, he shared duties with Ron Greenwood during the 1955 title winning season. Was stuck down by a knee injury the following year, at the height of his career and had to retire aged just 28. He went into the family carpet business, but died of cancer in 1983, aged 55.
