Walter Winterbottom

Position: Half-back

Biography: A school teacher before being spotted by Louis Rocca, he was named as one of the twelve discoveries of the 1937-1938 season by Topical Times. Made his debut against Leeds United standing in for George Vose, and went on to keep Vose out of the side when he returned to fitness. He looked a Centre-half of genuine promise but a back injury ended his career. A wing commander during the Second World War, he was appointed the FA's director of coaching and managed England between 1947-1962. Became secretary of the Central Council of Physical Recreation. He died in February 2002, aged 89.
